"It's more bad news for Sir Keir Starmer and for everyone struggling with the cost of living crisis. Inflation in August stayed at 3.8%, that is well above the 2% target, with some goods such as food, continuing to go up in price."

The Good Morning Britain presenter informed viewers that food and drink inflation had climbed to 5.1% in August. Passing over to political correspondent Louisa James, the ITV presenter provided additional details about the statistics, reports Wales Online.

Charlotte continued: "Hello, Louisa. This is more bad news, isn't it? For the Prime Minister, after, it's fair to say, it's a difficult week."

Louisa responded: "Yeah, it is the detail behind that headline figure of 3.8% which is significant because yes it does show that food inflation has risen for the fifth consecutive month.

"Now, that is offset by a reduction in air fares, which is why the overall figure has stayed the same. But, for context, that 3.8 figure is much lower than the peak of inflation, which was in 2022."

Louisa, presenting the latest economic update on ITV, highlighted a graph showing inflation's steady climb since April.

She elaborated: "That was when there was a big rise in a whole load of household bills and also when the government brought in increases in employer national insurance, which some companies say they're being forced to pass on in the form of higher prices."

The presenter then conveyed the Conservative Party's reaction, noting: "That is why the conservatives have called this figure, 'worrying news for families'. Blaming, what they call, Rachel Reeves 'mismanagement of the economy."

Louisa further explained that the rising inflation puts the government's pledge to improve financial wellbeing under scrutiny.

She concluded: "Mainly because it makes things more expensive, but also because it reduces the chance that the Bank of England will cut interest rates when it needs to decide that tomorrow and that, of course, affects people with mortgages."

Good Morning Britain is available to watch on ITVX.
