Team India’s young batting star Abhishek Sharma has been in red-hot form in the Asia Cup 2025. With two impactful innings already, including a blistering knock against Pakistan’s ace pacer Shaheen Afridi, he has emerged as a match-winner. Interestingly, this innings came in front of his father, Rajkumar Sharma, who revealed the bold step he once took to shape Abhishek into a fearless cricketer.
Practiced Against 150 kmph Bowling in U-16 DaysSpeaking to BCCI, Rajkumar Sharma recalled, “When Abhishek was in Under-16, I made him face deliveries at 150 kmph during training. People warned me that he could get injured, but he always told me—Papa, make them bowl faster. Power-hitting comes naturally to him, and he polished his technique against such pace.”
Future Match-Winner With the Ball TooA former left-arm spinner and first-class cricketer himself, Rajkumar believes Abhishek will also shine with the ball for India. “I trained him a lot in spin bowling, correcting his hand position and rhythm. He will definitely win matches with the ball in the future,” he said.
Yuvraj Singh’s Special RoleRajkumar also credited Yuvraj Singh for mentoring his son. “Yuvraj gave Abhishek valuable time, shared his experience, and even gave him a taste of international-level training. I’m very thankful to Yuvi and all the senior players and coaches who have guided Abhishek. Their blessings and support mean a lot.”
Cricket in His Blood Since ChildhoodGrowing up in a cricket-loving family, Abhishek’s passion was visible from the start. “He would trouble his mother, asking his sisters to throw balls at night for batting practice or catching drills. Senior players often told me he had the talent to play for India one day. Today, seeing him represent the country makes me proud,” Rajkumar shared with emotion.
