An Afghan migrant has been charged with stabbing the female manager of a fashion shop to death. Sayed Akbar S is alleged to have used an eight centimetre blade in the frenzied attack, during which he knifed Magda M. 26 times.
The horrific incident took place at a New Yorker clothing store in the German city of Krefeld. The 26-year-old suspect previously had an application for asylum turned down by German authorities, a regional court was told. However, Sayed was granted a reprieve from deportation, after officials decided it was too dangerous to send him back to his native country.
The horrific events unfolded after 7pm on May 21, as the 41-year old shop manager was closing up the store.
Magda M. was counting the day's takings when the defendant is alleged to have attacked his boss without warning.
Tragically she died at the scene from her multiple injuries, despite efforts by emergency services to save her.
The Afghan migrant was arrested by police not far from the shop. His hands were covered in the blood of his victim.
The suspect was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia by an expert witness and the prosecution acknowledged that he had acted "in a state of diminished responsibility".
The court hearing lasted just under 10 minutes, throughout which the defendant sat with a blank stare.
He is likely to spend the rest of his life in a psychiatric hospital.
Later, Magda's family spoke of their grief and trauma following the death of their daughter.
"The moment he ended Magda's life, our suffering began," they told the German publication Bild.
"A suffering that will never end and has traumatised many people forever. What are we supposed to think when we see this man?"
