It can be incredibly annoying when your clothes smell amazing fresh out of the washing machine, only to find that this disappears once dry. This can happen due to a number of factors, including not using enough fabric softener for the load size, or maybe you're overloading the washer with too many clothes. Luckily, there are a few ways to solve the issue, including adding two ingredients to your washing machine.
Taking to the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Karen Bond wrote: "I need some advice. My clothes smell nice when they come out of the washer. Then, when I dry them, they lose the smell. Once put away in the wardrobe, they never smell nice. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong or what I can use to make the smell stay?"
The post attracted more than 50 comments from fellow group members, recommending a variety of hacks.
Firstly, they all recommended making sure the clothing was fully dry before putting it away. Rita Trimmell wrote: "Be certain they are fully dried. Even the slightest bit of moisture can cause odour."
Denise Simpson added: "Are they drying quickly enough? If they take too long to dry, they will smell musty."
Other group members recommended adding white vinegar and baking soda to the wash cycle.
Gina Giradi commented: "Baking soda and white vinegar in the drum or drawer makes clothes smell 10 times better."
Lisa Turrell added: "Ditch fabric softener for a while and use white vinegar and baking soda to remove odour before using scent boosters."
Baking soda can help remove odours and soften fabrics, while vinegar can help break down detergent residues. Together, the duo creates a powerful cleaning agent suitable for laundry use.
To use the combination, baking soda can be used in the wash cycle along with the detergent, and vinegar can be used in the rinse cycle.
What's more, both can be picked up for as little as £1 each and used for cleaning around the home.
