Asia Cup hockey: Bangladesh crush Chinese Taipei 8-3 to stay alive in tournament

NEW DELHI: Bangladesh kept their hopes alive in the men’s Asia Cup hockey tournament with a commanding 8-3 win over Chinese Taipei in their second Pool B match on Saturday.


After going down 1-4 to Malaysia in their opener, Bangladesh bounced back strongly, while Chinese Taipei slumped to their second straight loss, following their 0-7 defeat to Korea in the first match.


Bangladesh were dominant in the second half, netting five goals in the final two quarters. Md Abdullah (4th, 26th minutes), Rakibul Hasan (42nd, 43rd) and Ashraful Islam (45th, 58th) scored two goals each, with Sohanur Sobuj (36th) and Rezaul Babu (56th) also adding to the tally.


For Chinese Taipei, Tsung-Yu Hsieh struck twice (10th, 18th), while Tsung-Jen Shih (60th) converted a penalty corner in the final minute.

Bangladesh will next face Korea in their concluding pool game on September 1, while Chinese Taipei meet Malaysia the same day.
