US President Donald Trump kept Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif and army chief Asim Munir waiting for over 30 minutes, joking they might already be “somewhere in the Oval Office.”
“They may even be in this room right now, I don’t know.....they may be somewhere in the beautiful Oval Office…” Trump quipped, drawing laughter from the press corps.
Warming up the room before the meeting, Trump boasted, “I solved seven wars,” before introducing “a great leader coming… the prime minister of Pakistan and the field marshal. The field marshal is a very great guy and so is the prime minister.”
The Oval Office meeting in Washington, DC, was also attended by vice president JD Vance and secretary of state Marco Rubio, the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement, describing the talks as having taken place in a “pleasant atmosphere.”
Interestingly, the meeting was kept closed to the press. It lasted for roughly one hour and 20 minutes.
This marked the first formal bilateral meeting between Trump and Sharif, nearly six years after former prime minister Imran Khan met Trump during his first term in July 2019.
