At least eight people were killed and 45 injured when a train collided with a double-decker passenger bus in Mexico on Monday, authorities said.
The crash occurred on a highway in the Atlacomulco municipality, northwest of Mexico City, according to the Civil Protection of the State of Mexico, as reported by AP. Traffic in both directions was closed to allow emergency services to respond.
Authorities did not immediately provide details on how the crash occurred, but a video circulating on social media showed the bus slowly moving through heavy traffic across the train tracks when a fast-moving train suddenly appeared and struck the bus in the middle. The train’s momentum carried the bus along the tracks and out of view.
No visible crossing gates or signals were present, and cars could be seen moving across the tracks just before the crash as traffic flowed.
Authorities said they were still working at the site, located in an industrial area with large warehouses and factories. The cause of the collision has not yet been determined.
